We drive developments in the debt collection industry

coeo has been in Europe since 2010 and has since grown to become one of the major players in debt collection. In Sweden, we started our operations in 2022 and have quickly established ourselves in the Swedish market by using advanced AI solutions and combining clear leadership with empathy.

We interviewed our Team Manager Sofia Freed, who believes that these factors are crucial for both the well-being of our employees and our financial results. Sofia explains:

“We focus strongly on digital solutions and use advanced technology to meet the needs of our customers and their customers [debtors]. If the debtors are satisfied, our customers get satisfied customers – and that is key. Many in the industry work in old, sluggish systems. At coeo, we have a proprietary system that makes us more flexible and adaptable to customer needs.”

 

A strong culture

Our leadership strategy is based on curiosity, commitment and clear communication. Being a present leader, while listening to the needs and ideas of employees, is central. We do not see empathy as a contradiction to business acumen, but as a necessary component to achieving success. Sofia elaborates:

“We have a strong corporate culture and are incredibly proud of it. coeo feels very welcoming. You are happy when you come to the office! The culture is something we do and not something we are, something that everyone buys into. We do not have a hierarchical agenda, but everyone’s ideas are equally valuable. Most and the best ideas usually start with someone in the team.”

We want to create what we haven't seen anywhere else.

When coeo was established in Sweden in 2022, we were four people - now we are 34 people who handle more than half a million cases every year. We are continuously recruiting to meet our growing need for colleagues. At our company, we often talk about "everything starts with people". Sofia tells us more:


“I always strive to find different personalities that match existing colleagues. That way we get a good mix. Debt collection is something you can learn, so we also look outside the industry when we recruit. It creates a breadth in the company. We don’t try to be like everyone else, but want to create what we haven’t seen anywhere else. We want to build our dream company with culture as the foundation. We think a lot about people and that diversity is good.”
Sofia continues and explains what all employees at coeo should have in common:

"Working at coeo is an incredibly cool journey - if you think it's fun to be part of the construction! Here you get to be part of "building the car while we drive". Not everything is finished - and it doesn't suit everyone. It's an important part of my recruitment tactics, to find out if coeo is a "perfect match" with the one I have in front of me. Of course, many things are rolling along like at other companies, but sometimes something outside your normal work tasks comes up that needs to be handled and then everyone needs to roll up their sleeves, here your title doesn't matter. We have no hierarchy, we do and solve things together."

 

"Seeing people grow is the best thing there is"

We place great importance on the well-being of our employees, as we see it as a basic requirement for being able to deliver good results. For example, we have frequent individual conversations, wellness during working hours and shared breakfasts that contribute to this. Creating a positive work environment where our employees feel comfortable yields results when it comes to maximizing both productivity and customer satisfaction. Sofia summarizes:

 

"You should feel that you are developing in your role and that you can develop internally. My biggest driving force in leadership is seeing people grow. Seeing people grow, both in their role and privately, is the best thing there is. We see each other. We don't take each other for granted. We make time for each other. We have a fantastic community at coeo, and I think that makes it feel easy to come in as a new employee. It's part of the strong culture – everyone is equally welcome," says Sofia and concludes:


“If we feel good, we do good things and then we deliver good results."
